The Sultanate council has declared today as the first day of Muharram 1445 after announcing that Tuesday would be the last day of the month of Hijjah, 1444 Hindi, corresponding to July 18, 2023. According to the Umm Al Qura Calendar, Wednesday, July 19, 2023, will be the first day of the month of Muharram, 1445 Hijri.
The crescent of the Islamic month of Muharram, 1445 AH, was sighted on Tuesday, July 18, marking the beginning of a new lunar calendar year. The Islamic New Year is an important holiday for Muslims as it commemorates the migration, or Hijra, of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and his followers from Mecca to Medina in the year 622.
States across Nigeria have declared today a public holiday to celebrate the Muslim faithful in the state. States like Yobe, Kwara, Zamfara, and Oyo have declared Wednesday, July 19, 2023, a work-free day to mark the Islamic New Year.
