Association of Campus Journalist at the University of Benin draws the attention of management on the need for proper lighting of roads and paths in the school environment.
This is a clarion call to the management of University of Benin to address the lack of light on the various roads and paths leading to hostels, lecture halls and faculties at night.
While the association acknowledges and applaud the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lillian Salami and the management for the focus and improvement in infrastructure especially the construction of buildings, it has also noted a slight negligence of a major aspect of infrastructure and of man’s life, which is light.
No doubt, University of Benin have been enjoying power supply prior to the disconnection of power by BEDC in May. But, the benefit of this power supply which is to illuminate the school environs has not been felt on most roads and paths leading to hostels, faculties and lecture halls at night.
Light, an integral part of man’s life is meant to ensure exposure and foster clarity. It is a visible radiation to the human eye and was the first thing created by God in the creation story to enhance the creation of other things.
Light is essential in the school environment as it is in our communities. If enhances efficiency, safety and well-being of students and staff of the school.
The essence of good lighting in the University of Benin cannot be overemphasized. Proper lighting in school environs will promote a conducive learning environment for students as some students are known for going to lecture halls to read at night in what is popularly known as night class.
Proper lighting of roads, streets and paths leading to lecture halls will also enhance the safety of students as it will reduce cases of harassment, accident and theft which easily occur in the absence of light. It will also help people to see properly when walking at night around the school environs.
In a little survey on lighting, conducted by ACJ, it noticed that, some roads and paths leading to lecture halls and hostels are dark at night, which doesn’t ensure the safety of students staying in hostels and those who come to school to read.
The roads in front of Uniben Primary School, hall4 and health center, social science car park, around John Harris Library, paths leading to physical science and engineering faculty are some of the places mentioned.
While it might look like a tall order, ACJ believes it is achievable to lighten these aforementioned locations because, the institution is blessed with a proficient VC and effective management who prioritizes the well-being and safety of students.
Association of campus journalists also recommend the use of solar lights which has been adopted by many communities. Solar generated lights are preferable as the roads and paths around the school environment will remain lightened even when there is interruption in power or power failure.
While ACJ appreciate Prof Lillian Salami and the management for their immense dedication to the development of Uniben, we hope for quick response as they are known for,in addressing this issue, which will be beneficial to all and sundry. This can be done by inspecting the campus at night and identifying areas that need lighting.
The management should also review and replace some of the existing lighting,as many of the lights are dim and students can barely see while walking or reading in lecture halls.
