Activist lawyer Maduabuchi Idam has issued a stern warning to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), demanding the regulation or outright ban of the reality TV show Big Brother Naija (BBNaija). In a letter dated Monday, August 4, 2025, the public interest lawyer threatened legal action within 30 days if the commission fails to act.

On Monday, the 4th of August 2025, lawyer activist “Maduabuchi Idam” wrote a letter to the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) threatening to take legal action on a popular TV show known as “BBNAIJA” within 30 days if the BBC refuses to ban or regulate the show.

The activist lawyer in his words described the show as “obscene, indecent and profane content,” demanding the prohibition or control of the content according to the “NBC ACT 1999”.

The public interest lawyer complained bitterly that the 10th season of the Big Brother Naija, which is presently in the second week has been characterised by obscene and pornographic content, he questions the role of the NBC regarding its regulatory directive to such TV broadcasts.

The lawyer refers to previous occasions where the NBC banned several music videos of Afrobeat artists like; Olamide, Phyno and WizKid which were encouraging pornographic content notwithstanding the consent of the audience. It puzzles him that the NBC has remained reluctant despite the BBNAIJA’s explicit content.

He states that the rated “18” content should be specifically reserved for its target audience so that underage and uninterested persons would not mistakenly come across it on TV or social media platforms.

The lawyer further stated that the show is neither educative, artistic, scientific nor literary in value, highlighting the moral dangers of such context in a country already challenged by social voices such as insecurity.

He concluded by giving the NBC a thirty-day ultimatum after which he will file a lawsuit in a court of competent jurisdiction if the Big Brother Naija show is not banned or properly supervised by the National Broadcasting Service.
