A medical programme organised by JCIN UNIBEN, the Health Fest, took place at the University of Benin (UNIBEN) on Saturday, 24th February 2024, drawing significant attention and participation. Hosted by the Junior Chambers International, University of Benin (JCIN UNIBEN), a non-profit network headed by Michelle Oluwaseyi Fayeun, the event aimed to promote well-being among attendees through a variety of health tests and activities.
The programme, initially scheduled for 9:00am, commenced slightly later at 9:40am, with Mrs Sharon delivering a speech on the dangers of certain foods and snacking habits, advocating for fasting for up to 16 hours per day. A question and answer session followed, leading to Coach Sharon’s presentation on Mental Health, its symptoms, and prevention strategies. Additionally, a game hosted by anchor Ige Emmanuel added an interactive element to the event proceedings.
Various health tests, including blood pressure screenings, blood group assessments, dental check-ups, and HIV screenings, were conducted, offering participants valuable insights into their health status. These efforts underscored the initiative’s goal of raising awareness about preventive healthcare and encouraging individuals to prioritise their well-being.
The Health Fest, supported by partners such as Nigerian Medical Laboratory Science Students’ Association, Hospitals Investment [Nig.] Ltd., and Edo State Ministry of Health, concluded with a grand finale, during which numerous participants received prizes and gifts, enhancing the event’s excitement and motivating attendees to actively engage in health screenings and activities. Directors of SDGs, Thalia Rukevwe and Rufus Uchechi, expressed gratitude to participants and volunteers for their enthusiastic support, highlighting the importance of such initiatives in fostering a culture of health consciousness and proactive healthcare practices within the community.
According to a 2023 ranking by Statista, Nigeria’s Health System falls in 157th place globally. The success of the Health Fest highlighted the significance of collaborative efforts in promoting public health and reaffirmed JCIN UNIBEN’s commitment to cultivating a healthier campus community. With positive feedback received, organisers are optimistic about hosting similar events in the future, continuing their mission to promote health and well-being among students and the broader community.
