The Inspector-General of Police of the Nigerian Police Force has publicly cautioned all officers against various human rights violations committed against civilians on different occasions.
As a result, the Inspector-General has issued a ban on all officers carrying firearms while dressed in civilian clothing (mufti) in public.
According to reports, this ban was issued on Monday during a virtual meeting with senior police officers. During the meeting, Inspector-General Egbetokun emphasised the need for greater professionalism and respect for civilians’ rights within the force.
A recent statement from the Force Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on his X profile reads:
“Yes, the IGP had a meeting with the CPs and above yesterday. The IGP addressed these issues based on some complaints we received at the FHQ. This directive must be complied with since the IGP personally engaged the senior officers, CPs, and above, who form and supervise these tactical teams. The police have a dress code, and we must appear in our approved uniforms while on operations.”
