Residents of Enugu state on Monday, 24th July 2023, defied the regular sit-at-home order in the state declared by a faction of IPOB. The residents took to the street in their thousands, carrying placards and banners with the inscription “enough is enough” to protest against the order.
In the past two years, the entire South-east region has been observing a sit-at-home order initially declared by IPOB, which was seen as a campaign to push for the release of its leader Nnamdi Kanu, who was detained by the DSS. But, however, the exercise has been hijacked by Simon Ekpa, a self-acclaimed disciple of Nnamdi Kanu and also a Finland-based activist who has allegedly been empowering thugs to cause havoc and mayhem in the region under the guise of enforcing the order.
The sit-at-home order has grounded economic activities in the region and led to consequent hardship as residents hardly come out on Mondays and whenever the order is passed. Ekpa recently ordered sit-at-home for one week in the South-east.
The Enugu state government has threatened to sanction anybody, groups, or organizations that observe the order.
