The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) on September 11, 2025, announced a total and indefinite strike over owed salaries. The ASUU issued this) Academic staff union of universities.

On September 11, 2025, in a letter addressed to the acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olubunmi Shittu, the union stated that its members had no choice but to withdraw their services due to the lack of payment of their wages. The letter, which was co-signed by ASUU-FUOYE Chairman O. A. Fagbuagun and Financial Secretary Ngwu Benitho, underlined that the action was in line with the national directive of ASUU’s “No Pay, No Work” policy.

According to the union, the directive from ASUU’s National Executive Council requires that university branches start a strike once salaries are not paid by the third day of a new month. FUOYE lecturers, the union said, had tolerated payment delays and could no longer proceed with academic activities without payment.

These strike is foreseen to disrupt lectures, examinations, and other academic arrangements on campus. Students and parents have expressed worry that the outcome may further destabilise the academic calendar, which has faced disruptions in recent years due to industrial actions across Nigerian universities.

Till now FUOYE management had not administered an official response to the union’s declaration. However, viewers note that fast action from either the federal government or the university authority may be necessary to prevent long-term disruption of the academic schedule.

The Academic Staff Union branch at FUOYE has said that the strike will remain total, indefinite, and extended until all salaries are paid in full.

This emphasises the overall challenges often faced in Nigeria’s university system, where clashes over owed salaries, funding, and agreements between the Federal Government and university unions continue to create issues.
