There was a fire outbreak this evening at Queen Idia Hostel (Hall 1) of the University of Benin.
The incident happened at about 8:30 pm on Sunday, 30 October, 2022 and was quickly curtailed by the hostel porters, security personnel and other hostel stakeholders before it escalated.
ACJ UNIBEN can confirm that the fire outbreak occurred at the utility room in 100 series, Block B due to the use of hot plate by some hostel occupants.
It is no news that the use of some electronic appliances like hot place, iron, etc are banned from use in the hostels yet many hostel occupants are still found making use of them. Some attribute this to the cost of kerosene on campus and some other factors. A few hostel occupants have blamed the fire on the long break and the fact that most things have not been in use for a long time.
Due to the quick intervention, no lives however were lost and no injuries were reportedly sustained in the incident.
