The Federal Government has scheduled a fresh meeting tomorrow, Tuesday 4th June 2024, with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) in an attempt to solve the issue of the nationwide strike. The meeting is scheduled to be held in Abuja at 10 a.m. prompt.
The organised labour announced on Friday, 31st May 2024, an indefinite nationwide strike over the refusal of the Federal Government to agree on a new minimum wage among other demands. Both parties convened for a meeting yesterday, 2nd June 2024, in what was a last-ditch attempt to avert the strike before it took effect today, but unfortunately, the meeting ended in a deadlock as the labour representatives were not willing to accept the Federal Government’s offer of ₦60,000.
The strike has halted economic activities. It was reported that the power grid has been shut down, leading to a nationwide blackout.
In addition, affiliate unions have already started complying with the directive issued by the NLC and TUC. Among those unions are the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG), Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, and National Union of Electricity Employees, among others.
