The Federal Government and the Organised Labour have reached a consensus on key issues, following a meeting held in the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday. The labour unions had called a nationwide strike on Monday to demand a new national minimum wage and reverse the electricity tariff hike. According to a joint statement released after the meeting, the following resolutions were reached:
– The President has committed to a national minimum wage higher than N60,000.
– The Tripartite Committee will meet daily for the next week to agree on a new national minimum wage.
– Labour will convene a meeting of its organs to consider the President’s commitment.
– No worker will be victimised for participating in the industrial action.
The strike, which began on Monday, has disrupted essential services, including power supply, transport, and banking. Labour unions are yet to release a statement on the suspension of the strike. The situation is still developing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
