The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has been selected as one of eight federal universities set to benefit from the Federal Government’s Solar Minigrid Energizing Education Programme.

The official signing ceremony, held in Abuja, was presided over by the Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, who encouraged Vice-Chancellors to embrace innovation and capitalize on government-led efforts to enhance higher education in Nigeria.

Representing UNIBEN’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Edoba Omoregie, SAN, at the event was the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Victor Igbineweka.

The solar minigrid project, once completed, is expected to provide the university with a consistent 24-hour power supply. It forms part of Phase IV of the Federal Government’s broader rural electrification strategy.

Professor Igbineweka signed the agreement on behalf of UNIBEN, while the Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, Engr. Abba Aliyu, represented the Federal Government.
