Falcons lose to Lionesses on penalties
By Osaro Matthew
In an intriguing Round of 16 fixture, the Group D winners, England, locked horns with Group B runners-up, Nigeria. The match took place in the Brisbane stadium on August 7, 2023, and ended in a goalless draw, leading to a penalty shootout to decide the winner.
Both teams fought hard throughout the match, which extended into extra time after a goalless result in regular time. The Lionesses of England showed resilience during extra time, playing with 10 players after their star player, Lauren James, received a red card for a violent conduct on Michelle Alozie.
As the Falcons were unable to breach the resolute defensive wall, the match went into penalties. Both teams missed their first kicks, while England successfully converted their second. Unfortunately, Nigeria’s Michelle Alozie, who had a fantastic game, missed their second kick as her shot went wide. Although the Falcons converted their third and fourth spot kicks, it wasn’t enough, as the Lionesses remained calm and collected, converting all their remaining spot kicks to secure a 4-2 victory.
