The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has spoken on the issue of the Federal government establishing mushroom universities without adequate funding options.
On Sunday, 28th January 2024, the National President of the Union (ASUU), Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, in a statement released, pointed out the fact that these universities have little or no hope for proper management, urging the Federal Government to stop politicising universities.
He also spoke on the promises made by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the withheld salaries of ASUU members.
According to Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, “One major fallout of our last struggle was the government’s decision to stop the salaries of our members as a ploy to force us back to work even when the substantive issues in the strike action had remained unresolved. Curiously, the seven-and-a-half months’ salaries remain unpaid even after we have done the work for which those salaries were held.”
The union also warned that any further delay in the payment of these salaries will lead to the worth of these monies decreasing.
