University of Benin have considered rationing of light within its campus due to the hike in electricity tariff.
In a bid to reflect the developments that led to the shutdown of the University of Benin on July 4, 2024, the management of the University called on a stakeholders meeting. This meeting was held on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, with adequate representatives from both students and lecturers.
Contained in a memo signed by the University’s Public Relations Officer, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, was the outcome of the meeting.
It was decided that there will electricity rationing within the campus. According to memo, Professor Ray Ozolua, the Ag. Vice Chancellor who repressnted the Vice Chancellor, said that “…a proposal that will ensure a minimum of eight hours and even distribution to the facilities to the faculties, all hostels and the residential quarters is to be considered by the management”.
Speaking on resumption, he said that the Senate and the management concluded that the situation of the country should be studied because of the threats of a nationwide protests before a resumption date is decided on, to ensure the safety of the students.
It was also concluded that every returning student will swear to the affidavit of good conduct and must abide by the stakeholders’ decision on the electricity issue.
The students of the University are assured that their resumption back to academic activities will be decided soon and they are also urged to pay their school charges.
