Security agencies in Edo State intensified the operations across several local government areas following a series of incidents linked to armed violence and kidnapping.
Officials confirmed over the weekend that joint patrol teams had recovered firearms and ammunition during targeted raids in parts of Oredo and the adjoining communities. The operation, according to sources within the state security structure, was prompted by investigations into a recent fatal altercation reportedly connected to disputes within a transport union network.
Residents in the affected neighbourhoods described a heightened security presence, with patrol vehicles stationed at key intersections and surveillance checkpoints mounted along major access roads. While authorities had not released full details of the recovered weapons, they confirmed that investigations were ongoing and that additional suspects might be apprehended.
The Nigeria Police Command in Edo State stated that the intensified patrol strategy formed part of a broader security review aimed at dismantling criminal cells operating within urban and semi-urban areas. Community leaders were urged to provide credible intelligence to assist law enforcement efforts.
Meanwhile, civil society organisations called for sustained engagement between security agencies and residents to prevent panic and misinformation. Several youth leaders in Benin City emphasised the importance of transparency, noting that consistent updates would help to build public trust.
Edo State had, in recent months, recorded periodic security concerns, particularly involving kidnapping and cult-related clashes. However, government officials maintained that proactive intelligence gathering and rapid response mechanisms were helping to stabilise vulnerable areas.
Authorities assured citizens that normal economic and social activities should continue without disruption, adding that further briefings would be provided as the investigations progressed.
