After the killing of hunters traveling back to the North in Edo State, the Governor of Edo State took swift action by suspending the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin, alongside all illegal vigilante groups operating within the state.
The Secretary to the Edo State Government, Umar Ikhikor Esa, confirmed that 14 suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing.
“After reviewing the preliminary report of the unfortunate incident on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Uromi in Esan North East, which led to the deaths of several travelers, the Governor has ordered the immediate suspension of all illegal vigilante groups operating under disguise in Edo State, including CP Friday Ibadin, the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps.”
The government clarified that the local vigilante group responsible for the attack was operating illegally, as it was neither approved nor registered with the Edo State Security Corps.
“The Edo State Government believes in the constitutionally guaranteed rights of citizens to move freely or engage in lawful business in any part of the country,” the statement read.
Investigations are still ongoing, with a serious manhunt underway to apprehend the perpetrators. A special team has been set up by the Inspector General of Police to aid in the investigation.
The Governor assured that the state remains committed to upholding constitutional rights, including the freedom of movement and lawful business operations for all Nigerians, regardless of their background.
The families of the deceased, community leaders, and the Governor of Kano State have been contacted, as most of the victims were from Kano.
