The Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Monday Okpebholo, has condemned the recent ambush of African Democratic Congress (ADC) members, attributing the attack to internal discord that has escalated beyond acceptable limits.
Governor Okpebholo expressed his empathy for the victims, stating it was regrettable that certain individuals have reportedly exploited the state’s peaceful environment to instigate unrest. He asserted that, as the Chief Security Officer of Edo State, he would not permit the region to be transformed into a battleground for political feuds.
The Governor further emphasised that no amount of political pressure would diminish the populace’s support for the current administration. He maintained that politics should centre on performance, public participation, and the active pursuit of trust.
Disapproving of the use of violence by politicians or campaigners, the Governor affirmed that such tactics demonstrate untrustworthiness and a profound disrespect for the electorate. He noted that his administration welcomes constructive criticism but will not be coerced by threats or orchestrated assaults.
While offering his sympathies to the ADC members, he advised the party to disregard external allegations, suggesting that the incident appeared to stem from internal strife. He urged the citizens of Edo State to remain calm and promote peace, stressing that the event should not tarnish the state’s reputation.
Furthermore, in a cautionary note to the opposition, the Governor urged political parties to resolve internal disagreements before organising public gatherings. He called upon security agencies and the police to remain vigilant and monitor political assemblies, re-emphasising his government’s steadfast commitment to protecting lives and property.
