The Edo State Government has reiterated its commitment to putting an end to cultism in the state.
The state government reacted on Sunday to the recent attack on soldiers on 7 June in Okomu community by criminals and cultists, which saw two soldiers and a police officer shot.
Chris Nehikhare, the State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, paid a visit to the wounded officers at the Military Base Hospital and pledged the Edo government’s support in footing their medical bills.
According to Nehikhare, no fewer than 150 people have died from cult-related clashes. He disclosed that Governor Godwin Obaseki frowned at the attack on military personnel and said a task force led by the Director of the State Security Service (DSS) had been set up to combat cult groups in the state.
He said, “We have come to quickly visit the wounded officers and the Army to assure them that the Edo Government will not tolerate this untoward behaviour. We don’t want what happened in Odi community in Bayelsa to happen here in Edo, or a repeat of what happened recently in Delta to happen here.”
“It is a serious matter and all Edo people, irrespective of political affiliations, must support the government in this fight against cultism and the killings going on,” he added.
