The government of Edo state has on Wednesday issued a ban on illegal revenue collection by certain transport union and consultant across Edo state , in order to restore order and protect residents from extortion end harassment.
In a special announcement signed on Tuesday August 5th 2025, the government, under the leadership of Governor Monday okpebholo, he expressed grave concern over the resurgence of illegal revenue collection by certain union and organisations under various guises across the state.
The statements names the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN), ANNEWAT, Drivers on Wheel, and private firm, Atalakpa Recovery Concept Limited as violators of their terms of engagement. It also includes that they hereby banned with immediate effect, all activities of the mentioned union are suspended indefinitely.
“These above mentioned union are not authorized to collect any form of dues, levies, taxes, or charges from motorists, drivers , traders, or any members of the public of Edo state.”
The statements also revealed that Atalakpa Recovery Concept Limited, which was initially contracted to ensure compliance, has been found complicit, in widespread abuse and extortion, effectively betraying the public trust.
Governor Monday Okpebholo pointed these unjust actions as economic sabotage and social oppression, stating that the use of union to harass or exploit road users in the name of revenue collection is over.
He also warned that on no account should any individual or group under any of these unions be seen collecting any form of payment from motorists or road users.
The statements added that all motorists, drivers and road users are advised to resist from paying any cash or comply with any form of illegal levy imposed by the above banned unions.
The government assured the public that the Commissioner of Police and all relevant security agencies have been notified and directed to arrest and prosecute any group or individuals found violating this rule.
The government also provided a hotline to report any illegal activity. It should be forwarded immediately to the Edo State Special Taskforce, coordinated by SP Michael Anetor via 08038157126.
