The Edo State Government has confirmed an outbreak of “dengue fever”, with “86 cases” officially recorded across several local government areas. Health officials are now intensifying surveillance, launching treatment plans, and stepping up public education to contain the viral infection.
An announcement came in by the Commissioner for Health Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole that an Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) has been activated to coordinate the response, this is with the already increased efforts in vector control and environmental sanitation campaigns.
The fever is primarily transmitted by the “Aedes aegypti” mosquito, and is characterized by high fever, severe headaches, joint pain, nausea, and skin rash. While not always fatal, severe cases can lead to hemorrhagic symptoms and organ complications if left untreated. Apparently this has been a global trend as (WHO) World Health Organization, charts a rise globally of dengue fever with more than 4.2 million cases reported in 2022 alone.
Containment efforts are being put in place and residents are urged to support by clearing stagnant water, covering water storage containers, using insect repellents, and reporting early symptoms to nearby health facilities. Public awareness campaigns are ongoing in schools, markets, and local media.
Health experts have raised concerns about the risk of further spread, particularly in urban areas with poor drainage systems—a challenge that remains prevalent in parts of Edo State. Despite the threat of escalation, officials remain optimistic. With active public cooperation and a sustained government response, health authorities believe the outbreak can be contained before it reaches a critical stage.
