The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has intensified his rhetoric ahead of the upcoming governorship election, describing the contest as a “do-or-die” affair. He warned that if the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) were to win, it would spell disaster for the state.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, Obaseki expressed concern over the potential consequences of an APC victory. “It’s a do-or-die affair because if they do, we die. The level of impunity and recklessness we see in the opposition party, if they take over Edo State, it is the end,” he stated.

The governor also condemned external influence in the election, referencing Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike’s public withdrawal of support for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Asue Ighodalo. He insisted that Edo voters are capable of making independent decisions.

“Edo people are not that dumb. They know who to vote for. They don’t need outsiders telling them what to do. This time, Edo people will decide because they know what they want,” Obaseki asserted.

Addressing criticism over his administration’s financial decisions, the governor dismissed claims from some political figures, stating, “Some politicians are unhappy because I’ve used government revenue to address the needs of the people.” Despite these criticisms, Obaseki affirmed that internal disagreements within the PDP would not derail the party’s chances in the upcoming election.
