Department of Political Science Clinches Victory in Dean’s Cup Final

By Raymond Ebireri

The Department of Political Science secured a remarkable victory in the 2023 Dean’s Cup, marking their second triumph in just three years. The decisive 1-0 win came after an intense clash against their fierce rivals from the Public Administration department, held at the Synthetic Pitch Sports Complex at the University of Benin today.

In an exhilarating finale characterized by back-and-forth action, the Department of Political Science emerged as the victors, reaffirming their status as the premier team within the Faculty of Social Sciences. The match saw limited scoring opportunities, with only one shot on target registered throughout the entire game. Following a goalless first half, the deadlock was finally broken in the second half by Warri. He capitalized on an error by the Public Administration goalkeeper, seizing an opportunity to launch the ball, which resulted in a deflection by Warri that found its way into the net, granting Political Science the lead. Despite Public Administration’s efforts to stage a comeback, the resilient defense of Political Science thwarted their endeavors.

As the final whistle blew, scenes of jubilation unfolded on the pitch, as supporters streamed in to congratulate and celebrate with the victorious players. The tournament itself was flawless for the Department of Political Science, achieving an impressive feat of not conceding a single goal throughout the entirety of the matches—mirroring the same record set during the 2021 edition.

The tournament also acknowledged outstanding individual performances, awarding accolades to notable players:

° Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament: Jerry (Political Science)
° Top Scorer of the Tournament: Ferrari (Public Administration)
° Best Player of the Tournament: Toshiba (Political Science)

Additionally, the sponsors of the tournament received special recognition in the form of commemorative medals.
