Reports of tragic killings in Plateau initially surfaced through a post about a young woman’s family, revealing a broader pattern of attacks primarily targeting Christians.

On January 25, 2024, Atiku Abubakar, a politician and former presidential candidate, expressed dismay over the violence in Mangu local government area, known for its substantial maize market. Atiku shared his concerns on social media platform X:

“I am deeply saddened by the violence and killings in the Mangu local government of Plateau State despite the imposition of a 24-hour curfew. This heinous act of violence, where innocent lives are brutally snatched away, homes set ablaze, and communities thrown into chaos, is a direct affront to the values of peace and unity that we hold dear.

It is imperative that our security agencies exhibit a higher degree of proactiveness, particularly in light of the recurring incidents of banditry in Plateau and across various parts of the country. The apparent lack of anticipation and preventive measures against such crises is a matter of grave concern. It is high time that our security forces rise to the occasion, ensuring the safety and well-being of our citizens.

Even as I call for peace, I stand in solidarity with the victims and their families during this difficult time. Let us all come together to ensure that such tragedies are not repeated. -AA”

Aisha Yesufu also addressed the unfortunate events, pointing out the hypocrisy of those lobbying for support for Gaza’s genocide victims but remaining silent about events in their own country:

“The lives of those in Gaza are not more important than the lives of those in Mangu. We must be humane enough to feel the death of fellow human beings for being humans and not only for whatever religious or tribal affiliations they must have.

Speaking up about Gaza massacre and being silent on Mangu massacre or vice versa is heinous.”

Many believe the killings to be religiously motivated, with a majority of the victims allegedly Christians. On social media platform X, Christian Emergency Alliance shares:

“Attacks against Christians in the Middle Belt have not stopped. Security forces tasked with protecting the people in Mangu are instead looking the other way. Local Christian leaders have had enough. Christian leaders around the world must rise to their aid.”

In a video, the CAN chairman of Mangu LGA decried the killings and mentioned the involvement of military personnel in the attacks:

This video has sparked controversy, with people weighing in on the gravity of the events.
