The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has clarified that its Bi-Modal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV) are not scams.
The Director of Information and Communication for the commission, Dr. Lawrence Bayode, made this clarification during a conversation space on X on Saturday, March 29, 2025. In his presentation titled, “BVAS and IREV: Facts and Myths”, he stated that BVAS and IREV are technological innovations aimed at enabling Nigeria’s electoral process.
“BVAS verify voter using fingerprint and facial recognition ensuring that only accredited voters cast their ballots”
“IREV is an online portal that allows the public to view scanned polling unit results for transparency. It doesn’t count votes or collate votes.”
He dismissed the notion that slow upload, server downtime, or network issues equated to fraud.
“There is a belief that BVAS and IREV are scams. And, these misconceptions arise from misunderstanding, technical issues and general distrust in the Electoral process.”
He stated that results are recorded on Form EC8A and uploaded to the IREV, tearing down the myths.
He reiterated INEC’s commitment to educating voters and building public trust, reducing apathy and ensuring credible elections.
