Idris Elba will play the role of Chinua Achebe’s main protagonist, “Okonkwo,” in the television adaptation of Achebe’s literary classic, Things Fall Apart. The series is being produced by Idris Elba alongside Gina Carter. It has been announced that British-Nigerian actor, David Oyelowo, and Amanda N’Duka will also serve as executive producers of the series. Achebe Masterworks will join the project as executive producers as well.
Things Fall Apart was first published in 1958, and the classic piece of African literature has continued to captivate modern audiences. Other works by Achebe include No Longer at Ease and Arrow of God. The story revolves around Okonkwo, a traditional wrestler from Umuofia village. Nollywood legend, Pete Edochie, played the character of Okonkwo in the Nollywood adaptation of the story, which was initially released in 1987 and directed by David Orere.
Nigerians have taken to social media platforms like X and Facebook to share their opinions on the casting of British actor Idris Elba as the iconic character of Okonkwo.
In an interview with Channels TV, veteran Nollywood actor, Bob Manuel Udokwu, emphasised the need to use Nigerian actors in stories deeply rooted in Nigerian culture. He shared his opinion on the issue of Idris Elba playing the main protagonist in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart.
The veteran stated, “I don’t have anything against that as an actor, but I think we have top-class actors in Nigeria who can play that role even better, knowing where the story is coming from.”
Popular Nollywood actor, Lateef Adedimeji, speaking as a guest on Nollywood on Radio, shared his opinion on the topic. He believes that the casting of Idris Elba as the iconic character of Okonkwo was mainly for international recognition.
“There is something else at play here – it may be for the market, or to ensure global acceptance. But it’s definitely not a reflection of a lack of talent in Nollywood,” he stated.
Idris Elba has delivered commendable performances in Thor, The Mountain Between Us, and Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom. He also starred in the movie adaptation of Uzodinma Iweala’s novel, Beasts of No Nation, in 2015.
