Tobi Amusan has been named Nigeria’s flagbearer for the opening ceremony of the 2024 Olympics in Paris. She becomes the first athlete from Athletics in 20 years, since Mary Onyali at the Athens 2004 Games, to receive such an honour.

Tobi Amusan is a Nigerian track and field athlete who specialises in the 100 metres hurdles and also competes as a sprinter. Amusan is the current world record holder in the 100 metres hurdles with a time of 12.12 seconds, which she set at the 2022 women’s 100 metres hurdles semi-final in Eugene, Oregon. She has won back-to-back Commonwealth and African titles in 2018 and 2022 in the 100 metres hurdles and is also a two-time African Games champion in the event. She is set to represent the country as a top star and a top medal prospect for Nigeria in the Olympics. She looks forward to doing better than she did in the Tokyo Olympics, where she came fourth in the final race.

In another appointment, the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) also announced Badminton player Anuoluwapo Opeyori as the General Team Captain for Nigeria in Paris. He started playing badminton together with his brother in 2005 and was later selected to join Nigeria’s senior national team in 2017. He has won African championships and African Games in the singles event in 2019. He also competed at the Summer Olympics 2020. He will be looking to add more medals to his collection as he gives his best in the Olympic Games in Paris.
