The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has declared an indefinite strike, scheduled to commence on Friday, 21 November 2025. The union reportedly reached this decision following an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC), during which it reviewed the Federal Government’s continued failure to address its long-standing demands.

According to the union, the unresolved issues include the payment of the three-and-a-half months of salaries withheld during the 2022 strike, the Federal Government’s proposed 35 per cent salary increase which ASUU has rejected as inadequate, and the renegotiation of the 2009 FGN–ASUU agreement. The union noted that the unaddressed provisions of the agreement relate particularly to sustainable university funding, improved staff welfare, and the overall revitalisation of the public university system.

ASUU stated that the decision to embark on an indefinite strike became necessary after several meetings and engagements with the government yielded no concrete commitments. The union emphasised that it remains open to meaningful dialogue but insists that the Federal Government must demonstrate genuine willingness to resolve the lingering issues affecting the nation’s tertiary education sector.
