Two airplane models, innovated by Moses Osaghale, a final year student of Mechanical Engineering in Auchi Polytechnic, Edo state and his team, were exhibited today, 26th April, 2021, in the University of Benin, Benin City, Edo state.
The exhibition was held to mark World Intellectual Property Day 2021, an event established in the year 2000 by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life” and “to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe”.
A gathering of UNIBEN students close to the Department of Geology provided an audience for the event as the aircraft lifted off into the sky. In attendance also, were various media houses who witnessed the event.
In an interview with NEWSMEN, Moses explained how the innovation could be useful in the economy. “I designed this aircraft for military purpose, for surveillances, and to drop relevant arms in cases of attacks and insurgencies”, Moses said.
“It also has features which can be used in farms and agriculture. It can be used for fumigation, watering and other things,”
“Even the media can use it to access certain areas which are hazardous to the media personnel”, he emphasized.
Mr Osaghale also revealed that materials for the homemade project were sourced locally and he called on the government or anyone who could key into this project to support their innovation.
“As it is, it can provide employment for the youths if it is commercialized locally…”, Osaghale added.
Other members of the team include: Engr. Dan Aigbe-Asazobor (Project Director), Engr. Efosa Evbawaru(Program Director, SAVE AFRICA INVENTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE – SAIDC), Oviawe Kindness (Secretary, SAVE AFRICA INVENTIONS AND DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE – SAIDC)
The team also added that their message was “Operation Give Invention Attention”.
