On May 9, 2025, the Ogun State Government officially renamed the Abeokuta Stadium as the MKO Abiola Sports Complex following a major upgrade of its facilities. Previously, the stadium featured only a football pitch and an athletics track. However, it has now been transformed to include a basketball court, handball and tennis courts, a 50-metre Olympic-size swimming pool, a digital scoreboard, a tartan track, and a hybrid football turf with seating capacity for 150 guests.

Governor Dapo Abiodun stated that the renovations were carried out in preparation for the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF). The Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) had selected Abeokuta, Ogun State, to host the event, replacing Algeria as the initial host country. The governor further expressed his hope that the festival, expected to commence in July 2025, would place Ogun State on the map as a key player in the global sports arena.

He also emphasized that this development would not only enhance the state’s infrastructure but also boost its economy. With increased commercial activity expected during the event, business owners are likely to enjoy a significant rise in profits, thereby contributing to the overall economic growth of Ogun State.
