A 34-year-old woman identified as Deborah was apprehended in the early hours of today for stealing a newborn from a hospital in Ekiti State. The hospital’s name has been disclosed by the authorities.
During the interrogation session following her arrest, Deborah claimed her reason for stealing the baby was to keep her relationship with her long-distance lover, who is based in the United Kingdom.
According to her, she did not want to lose her lover, as she had been gaining a lot from him. She also said it would not be easy to find someone in Nigeria who would want to marry her or spend on her the way her lover does.
She went on to say that she was previously pregnant for her lover, with whom she had her introduction ceremony last year, and that he was aware before traveling back to the United Kingdom.
Deborah stated that her loss of the pregnancy in early March prompted her to take the drastic decision of stealing the baby and claiming it as her own during her expected due date, in order to deceive her UK-based lover without his consent.
She is still in custody and undergoing further interrogation, as authorities believe she had an accomplice who provided her with information from within the hospital.
