The third day of the 18th CMESBAHF National Conference, which was held at the University of Benin, Festus Iyayi Hall, was packed with lots of impactful, educative, and thrilling sessions, as well as career-shaping and life-changing insights for the students in health and life sciences.

The activities for the day started with Dr. Kelechi Love Ezeudensi, as she opened the day with a session she tagged as “Beyond Your Degree: Exploring Career Pathways in Human Physiology.” In this session, she encouraged participants to explore diverse opportunities even beyond the traditional path.

Afterwards, Prof. Izuchukwu Azuka Okafor came on board to talk extensively on the topic “Preparing for Postgraduate Scholarships and Fellowships.” During his session, he emphasized that “in scholarship, preparation beats talent.” He further proffered practical advice on building strong academic profiles, academic relationships, and writing compelling applications.

However, Dr. Nathaniel George followed with a presentation of a session he tagged “Innovating Biomedical Solutions for Nigerian Healthcare Challenges,” where he urged the students to prioritize impact over money, and gave a step-by-step approach to achieving one’s professional vision.

Furthermore, a panel session featuring two of the facilitators — Dr. Nathaniel George and Dr. Olaniyi Olugbemi — addressed questions on navigating the Nigerian health sector. This was thus followed by a very powerful impartation session, which was led by Dr. Gabriel Afolayan.

In a brief post-event interview with one of the participants, who also happened to be a volunteer at the conference, Kelvin Julius, a 200-level student of the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences (BMS), University of Benin, described the conference as “interesting and insightful.” He further stated that his knowledge was broadened as he understood better the different career pathways to courses like Anatomy and Physiology. He also revealed that through the conference, he has been able to learn how to draft out a cover letter, as well as the scopes and ways of applying for scholarships.

The day ended with the official unveiling of the new CMESBAHF national executives, presented by Mr. Tabel Omole.

Day 3 of the conference was a blend of academic growth, spiritual impartation, and career empowerment.
